Description
The Civil Engineering Computational Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a key academic and research facility located in the Civil Engineering Ikatsi Building. Established under Rector Decree No. 2312/UN5.1.R/SK/SPB/2017, the lab was originally intended to support the Computer Programming course practicum, and has since evolved into a center for developing modeling and numerical analysis skills in civil engineering.
This laboratory provides access to civil engineering software such as Midas Gen, Midas Civil, Midas GTS NX, Midas FEA NX, OpenFOAM, NEMOH, and Waves2Foam. These tools are used by students, lecturers, and researchers for building design and infrastructure modeling. The use of such software enhances students’ understanding of digital modeling, offering faster, more accurate, and cost-effective alternatives to traditional experimental methods.
Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the lab supports research on sustainable infrastructure, innovation, and climate action. Current services include:
Computer Programming practicums
Software access for research and structural design
Software training sessions
Computer-based examinations
Looking ahead, the Civil Engineering Computational Laboratory at USU aims to integrate High Performance Computing (HPC) systems to support complex modeling that requires parallel computation using multiprocessor and multicore systems. This strategic development positions the lab as a vital contributor to producing skilled graduates and advancing computational capabilities in civil engineering.
