Description

The Smart Radio System Laboratory is one of the instructional and research laboratories under the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara. It supports various telecommunication-related courses, including Antenna Systems, Microwave Communication, Mobile Communication Systems, Telecommunication Networks, Cloud Computing and IoT, and 5G Communication.

Formerly known as the Antenna and Propagation Laboratory, which was established in 1979, this lab underwent a name change to reflect the rapid technological shift in radio and wireless communication, especially the integration of artificial intelligence into modern radio systems.

Courses conducting practical work in this laboratory include:

  • Antenna Systems (TEE3228)

  • Microwave Communication (TEE3236)

  • Satellite Communication (TEE4131)

  • Telecommunication Networks (TEE2204)

  • Cloud Computing and IoT (TEE3218)

  • Wireless Sensor Networks (TEE3232)

In addition to supporting academic and research activities, the lab also offers services to the public, such as:

  1. Diagnosis and repair of laboratory electronic instruments (e.g., oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and electronic-based modules).

  2. Modeling, simulation, and prototyping of specialized radio systems (e.g., custom antenna systems).

  3. Consultation on the health effects of radio wave propagation (e.g., radiation from radio towers).

  4. Expert witness services in telecommunication-related legal cases.

  5. Training in radio and wireless communication technologies upon request.

The Smart Radio System Laboratory serves as a vital hub for equipping students with cutting-edge skills and advancing research in intelligent radio systems and wireless communication.
