Description
The Solid Waste Laboratory is part of the Environmental Engineering Study Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Established in 2012, it is located on the second floor of the Environmental Engineering Building and is managed by a Laboratory Head, supported by faculty staff and student assistants.
This laboratory serves as a learning facility supporting the practical component of the course Air Quality and Solid Waste Laboratory (TEL 2202), held every even semester. In addition to academic instruction, the lab is also used for student and faculty research focused on solid waste characterization and management.
With a total area of 22.5 m², the lab consists of four main functional spaces:
Consumable Material Storage Room
Head of Laboratory Office
Laboratory Technician Room
Laboratory Assistant Room
The laboratory is equipped with instruments for analyzing the physical and chemical properties of solid waste, including bulk density, moisture content, volatile matter, ash content, and organic carbon content.
The available practicum modules include:
Waste generation analysis, bulk density, and composition determination
Analysis of moisture content, volatile matter, and ash content
Determination of organic carbon (C) content in solid waste
Through this laboratory, students are expected to gain hands-on experience in solid waste analysis, supporting the development of practical skills and innovative research in environmental waste management.
