The 39th Anniversary of USU Chemical Engineering was celebrated with enthusiasm, featuring competitions, guest lectures, and a grand finale. Students, lecturers, and alumni gathered at Gedung Pancasila USU for this memorable event.

The 39th Anniversary of the Chemical Engineering Department at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) was successfully held with great excitement. The event was attended not only by Chemical Engineering students but also by lecturers and several alumni, who joined the grand finale celebration on November 17, 2018, at Gedung Pancasila USU. This year’s anniversary featured three exciting competitions open to all Chemical Engineering students: Product Design Competition, Scientific Article Competition, and Photography Competition themed around the environmental conditions of Medan City.

Gedung Pancasila was decorated to enliven the event. After the registration desk, there was a photo booth on the right for attendees to capture memorable moments, while on the left, the top 10 photographs from the Photography Competition were displayed. Additionally, the winning works from the Product Design Competition—1st, 2nd, and 3rd places—were also showcased.

From 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, students enthusiastically participated in a guest lecture featuring two alumni from USU’s Chemical Engineering Department. The first speaker was Mr. Mawardi, S.T., who works at PT. Sinarmas Oleochemical as Department Head of Soap Plant, Beading, Flake & Drumming Fatty Acid Glycerine. The second speaker was Mr. Murry Septianus, S.T., who serves as SEA Area Manager at Severn Glocon Ltd., United Kingdom (UK).

The event ran smoothly and culminated in the grand finale of the 39th Anniversary of Chemical Engineering, combined with an Alumni Gathering that began at 7:00 PM. The activities commenced with traditional dances performed by Chemical Engineering students, featuring Batak and Malay dances. To further enliven the grand finale, performances included student bands from various batches and a solo performance by a student from the Class of 2018. One band from the Class of 2016 performed a signature Chemical Engineering song, "Balada Teknik Kimia," which brought the audience to their feet, singing along with pride as members of the USU Chemical Engineering family. The event also included stand-up comedy performances and games with surprise prizes prepared by the committee.

The evening continued with the ceremonial cutting of the "tumpeng" (traditional rice cone) attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Ir. Seri Maulina, M.Si., Ph.D., the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, Maya Sarah, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPM, and the Secretary of the Chemical Engineering Department, Erni Misran, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.

The event concluded with the announcement of the winners of the three competitions and a group photo session with all USU Chemical Engineering students and faculty members in attendance. (For the list of competition winners, visit the HIMATEK FT-USU Instagram page.)
