Medan, 25 May 2026 – The Chemical Engineering Student Association (HIMATEK) of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) organized a Pre-Cadre Training and Basic Organizational Leadership Program (LDO) at the Faculty of Engineering Auditorium.
The program, attended by the 2025 student cohort, was designed to prepare students for academic life in the Department of Chemical Engineering while fostering character, leadership, and a spirit of collaboration from the beginning of their university journey.
During the Pre-Cadre Training session, Ir. Kelvin Hadinatan, S.T., M.Sc. delivered a presentation on strategies for personal and professional development throughout higher education.
Participants gained valuable insights into various opportunities for enhancing both their academic and professional competencies. Topics included scholarship opportunities, internship programs, and participation in academic and non-academic competitions. Through these discussions, students were encouraged to proactively plan their university experience by focusing not only on academic achievement but also on developing practical skills, expanding professional networks, and gaining experiences relevant to their future careers.
The program continued with the Basic Organizational Leadership Program (LDO), which focused on strengthening students' understanding of organizational life on campus. Participants received training on the fundamentals of student organizations, the importance of effective time management in balancing academic and organizational commitments, and the role of student organizations as platforms for developing leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. During the session, students were also introduced to the Chemical Engineering Student Association (HIMATEK) and the Indonesian Chemical Engineering Student Activities Coordinating Board (BKKMTKI) as organizations that provide opportunities to expand professional networks, enhance personal capacity, and contribute to initiatives at both the local and national levels.
Through this series of activities, students gained an early foundation for recognizing their potential, planning their competency development throughout their studies, and understanding their responsibilities as members of the academic community. The experience is expected to help shape Chemical Engineering students into adaptive, ethical, collaborative, and professionally prepared graduates capable of meeting the challenges of the evolving industrial landscape.
The implementation of the HIMATEK Pre-Cadre Training and Basic Organizational Leadership Program reflects the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara's commitment to creating a learning environment that supports students' holistic development. By integrating classroom learning with student organizational activities, the faculty continues to nurture graduates who excel academically while demonstrating strong leadership, collaboration skills, and a commitment to making meaningful contributions to society and sustainable development.
