On Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at 14:00, a virtual (online) coordination and discussion meeting was held between the USU Department of Architecture and the Faculty Advisory Council (DPF) FT USU regarding the proposed plan to establish a Faculty / School of Architecture and Planning. The meeting aims to explain the strategic plan for establishing the Faculty / School of Architecture and Planning USU to stakeholders in the FT USU environment to get consideration, input, and support, which will be discussed further at a higher stage in the USU Academic Senate Leadership Meeting.

The presentation on the establishment of the USU Faculty / School of Architecture and Planning was chaired and presented by Ir. Nurlisa Ginting, MSc, Ph.D. IPM. In her presentation, she conveyed the importance of establishing the Faculty / School from the aspect of the development of grouping the field of architecture in various universities in the world, which has a trend of specialization and unique differences from engineering schools. In terms of business aspects, the need and relevance to the development and challenges of the world of work and the Architect Law no. 6 of 2017 requires building planners and the built environment to have specific expertise that needs adjustment, so that the Department of Architecture can be more developed if it is under an independent and stand-alone Faculty or school.

Ir. Nurlisa Ginting MSc, Ph.D.IPM, said that the establishment of this Faculty / School will contribute to the creative industry/economy and Indonesia's development. USU, as an institution, plays an active role in producing graduates who are engaged and expert in the field of development planning and control. Architecture is an applied science that has its own scientific discipline. This plan is in line with Permenristekdikti No. 63 of 2016 concerning Degrees and Procedures for Writing Degrees in Higher Education and Permenristekdikti No. 257 / M / KPT / 2017 concerning the Name of Study Programs in Higher Education which separates the clumps of Engineering or Engineering (Engineering) and the clumps of Architecture, Design and Planning (Architecture, Design and Planning). USU is the largest state university on the island of Sumatra but does not yet have a School of Architecture and Planning with a Regional and Urban Planning study program. The USU Department of Architecture with A accreditation can be further developed into a school of Architecture and Planning and other related study programs (PWK, Interior, Landscaping, etc.).

The proposed establishment of the School of Architecture and Planning is not something from scratch but is a development of a pre-existing study program, namely the Architecture study program. The proposed School of Architecture and Planning consists of several study programs, among others: Undergraduate Program (S1) consisting of Architecture Study Program and Urban and Regional Planning Study Program, Architect Professional Program, Master Program (S2) consisting of Master Program in Architecture and Master Program in Urban Development Management (MPK) and Doctoral Program in Architecture. These study programs already exist, except for the Urban and Regional Planning Study Program, which will be formed at the same time as the School of Architecture and Planning, Universitas Sumatera Utara.

The education system needs to

adapt and focus more on accommodating architecture and planning education in one management school and/or faculty.

Looking at the trend of Architecture schools in various campuses both domestically such as the School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development, Institut Teknologi Bandung (SAPPK ITB), Faculty of Architecture Design and Planning, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya and abroad such as the School of Housing, Building and Planning, University Sains Malaysia (USM), School of Architecture, RMIT Australia and many other campuses in the world, the change in the Architecture and Planning Education system is an urgency that is relevant to the development of the field of Architecture today.

In the Joint Meeting of DPF, Prof. Rusyanto argued that if the Department of Architecture remains under the Faculty of Engineering USU, it will be difficult to develop and adapt, and its space will be limited to answer the challenges and relevance of the Architect Law. He added that USU will be more victorious and progressive if the School of Architecture and Planning is established at the University of North Sumatra. Prof. Bustami Syam, former dean of FT and vice chancellor IV of USU, said that approaches and persuasions had been made by the faculty establishment proposal team from the USU Department of Architecture teaching staff. Prof. Bustami, expressed his support, in line with Prof. Rusyanto that USU will be more victorious in the future with establishing the USU School / Faculty of Architecture and Planning.

Responding to this proposal, Ir Fahmi ST, M.Sc Ph.D Dean of the USU Faculty of Engineering, said that he would assess and evaluate the plan to establish the USU School of Architecture and would continue it further in the USU Academic Senate Leadership Meeting. This program is in line with the support that establishing the School can be an indicator of the assessment calculated to increase the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) Ranking of USU. The establishment of the USU Faculty/School of Architecture and Planning is also supported by Dr. Ir. M. Sabri, MT, IPM, Asean Eng as Chairman of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) North Sumatra, and Prof. Johannes Tarigan, ST MT, as well as all Heads of Department of the USU Faculty of Engineering.

After listening to various views from the Professors and Department leaders at the USU Faculty of Engineering, in general, the aspirations of the Department of Architecture regarding the establishment of the Faculty / School of Architecture and Planning received full support from various parties. Professors and Department Leaders at the USU Faculty of Engineering, in the DPF meeting, expressed their support for approving the USU Department of Architecture to transform into the USU Faculty / School of Architecture and Planning. The results of the Faculty Advisory Council (DPF) Meeting will be submitted by Ir Fahmi ST M.Sc Ph.D, as Dean of FT USU, at the USU Academic Senate leadership meeting. Hopefully, the establishment of the Faculty / School of Architecture and Planning will be realized and get support from all parties so that USU can be better as a Leading Educational Institution in Indonesia towards a World Class University.
