A strong spirit of environmental care has become an important part of the 2026 Campus Life Introduction for New Students (PKKMB) of the Mining Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU). One of the activities that drew attention was the planting of tree seedlings in the courtyard of the Mining Engineering Study Program, involving new students together with lecturers, the study program leadership, and academic staff.
The tree-planting activity took place in a warm atmosphere of togetherness. The new students did not merely participate as part of the PKKMB agenda; they were directly involved in the planting process. Several students worked together to prepare the planting media, plant the seedlings, and ensure the trees were properly established.
The activity also served as a valuable moment for the new students to interact more closely with lecturers and the academic community of the Mining Engineering Study Program. The Secretary of the Mining Engineering Study Program, Edi Yasa Ardiansyah, explained that the tree-planting activity carries a broader meaning beyond simply greening the campus grounds.
“The purpose of this activity, apart from introducing the green campus of USU, is also an effort to cultivate students’ care and love for the environment while supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This activity also supports the USU Green Campus program initiated by the Rector,” said Edi Yasa Ardiansyah.
According to him, Mining Engineering students need to develop environmental awareness from the very beginning of their academic journey. The field of mining is closely related to the utilization of natural resources; therefore, future graduates of Mining Engineering must understand the importance of balancing natural resource utilization, environmental sustainability, and the interests of society.
Through a simple activity such as planting trees, students are encouraged to build positive habits in protecting the environment. These values are expected not to stop within the campus environment but to become part of the students’ character both during their academic activities and later when they enter the professional world.
Strengthening the Green Campus Identity
The planting of tree seedlings during PKKMB 2026 also represents a concrete form of support from the Mining Engineering Study Program for efforts to create a greener, more beautiful, and sustainable campus environment.
The Green Campus concept is not limited to the existence of green open spaces; it also encompasses the development of a culture among the academic community that is conscious of environmental sustainability.
