Medan — October 15, 2026, the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, and the North Sumatra Provincial Board of the Indonesian Association of Planners (IAP North Sumatra) signed a Memorandum of Agreement. This agreement serves as the foundation for synergy in implementing the three pillars of higher education and developing the urban and regional planning profession.

The Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Ir. Renita Manurung, M.T. (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara) and Boyke P. Sirait, S.T., M.A.B., IAP (Chairperson of IAP North Sumatra). The collaboration aims to utilize the expertise, human resources, and infrastructure of both parties to support education and strengthen the professional capacity of planners.

In the field of education, the collaboration provides opportunities for IAP members to serve as guest lecturers, teaching practitioners, and speakers in the Urban and Regional Planning Study Program. IAP may also facilitate internships, fieldwork, certified independent projects, and competency assessments for students and graduates.

In the academic field, the collaboration also includes IAP's involvement in reviewing and refining the curriculum based on Outcome-Based Education. These activities aim to ensure that graduate competencies remain aligned with the standards and needs of the planning profession.

In the field of research and innovation, both parties provide opportunities for applied studies, collaborative research, scientific publications, and the preparation of policy recommendations concerning spatial planning, urban development, disaster mitigation, rural development, and sustainable tourism. Community service may be carried out through spatial planning assistance and capacity building for local governments.

This collaboration primarily supports SDG 11—Sustainable Cities and Communities, by strengthening education and practice in urban and regional planning. SDG 4—Quality Education is relevant through professional learning and certification, while SDG 17—Partnerships for the Goals is reflected in the collaboration between the university and a professional organization.
