September 29, 2026, the Faculty of Engineering USU held a meeting with PT Kawasan Industri Medan (PT KIM). The meeting discussed several potential areas of cooperation that could connect the expertise of FT USU with the needs of human resource development and industrial estate development.

The meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Ir. Renita Manurung, M.T. (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering); Prof. Dr. Ir. Rosdanelli Hasibuan, M.T. (Vice Dean for Education, Student Affairs, and Alumni Affairs); Ir. Muhammad Agung Putra Handana, S.T., M.T. The discussion covered opportunities to develop the competencies of PT KIM staff and provide experts from FT USU to support assessment activities, either through self-managed schemes or third-party consultation. The two parties also discussed the possibility of conducting an industrial estate development study for a planned township as a residential or accommodation area for PT KIM guests.

In the academic field, PT KIM expressed its readiness to provide opportunities for facilitating lecturer research and student internships. These activities could potentially be conducted within the PT KIM environment or at tenant companies operating in the industrial estate.

This meeting primarily supports SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals through exploring synergies between higher education institutions and industrial estate managers. SDG 4 – Quality Education and SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure are also relevant through opportunities for competency development, field-based learning, research, technical expertise, and studies of industrial estate infrastructure.

FT USU encourages the follow-up of the potential cooperation to be formulated in a measurable and accountable manner and to provide benefits for education and industrial development.
