The Chemical Engineering Department of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the USU Chemical Engineering Alumni Association, hosted an online guest lecture on Tuesday, December 15, 2020. The event was attended by students taking the Oil and Gas Processing Technology course.
The guest speaker for this lecture was Muhammad Yandi Mukhdar, S.T., an alumnus of USU's Chemical Engineering program who currently serves as Section Head of the Hydroskimming Complex-Production at PT Pertamina RU II Dumai. The session began with opening remarks and a welcome speech by the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, Ir. Maya Sarah, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPM., who also serves as the course lecturer.

Muhammad Yandi Mukhdar, S.T., delivered a presentation on the topic “Treating Process in Oil Refining.” He covered various aspects, including the treating process network, the basis for selecting processes based on the physical and chemical properties of contaminants, types of treating processes such as hydrotreating, liquid treating, and gas treating, as well as operational challenges such as equipment corrosion, MEA solution degradation, and foaming. The treating process itself is the purification of crude oil by removing its impurities.

During the lecture, participants were given opportunities to ask questions after each subtopic presentation. Several attendees enthusiastically raised questions, which were answered directly by the speaker. Although the lecture was conducted online, it is hoped that the knowledge shared will be beneficial for all participants.
