Shell Eco-marathon (SEM) Asia 2017 was held at the Changi Exhibition Center, Singapore, from March 16 to 19, 2017. SEM is a competition challenging student teams from various countries in the Asia Pacific and the Middle East to design, build, and drive the most energy-efficient vehicles. This year, Singapore hosted the Make The Future Singapore 2017 (MTFS) festival for the first time. The festival showcased ideas and innovations related to global energy challenges aimed at generating cleaner and lower CO2 energy.
MTFS featured three interactive zones: “Our Energy Future”, “On The Move”, and “Live, Work, Play”. Through interactive and hands-on experiences in these zones, visitors were encouraged to learn about the future of energy—from renewable energy to natural gas and low-carbon technologies—explore brilliant ideas from Asia, and enjoy performances by celebrities on the main stage. In this SEM, Team Horas represented Indonesia.

In the 2017 competition, Team Horas presented two vehicles that had successfully passed selection tests prior to the event. The vehicles featured a predominantly black design with accents of ulos Batak, representing the Batak ethnic identity of North Sumatra. The Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department of Universitas Sumatera Utara also accompanied the students competing in this prestigious event.
