On Thursday, November 23, 2017, the 11th Lustrum of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Universitas Sumatera Utara was held at Hotel Grandika. The event included workshops and seminars on business engineering as well as community service activities such as blood donations and aid distribution to the Sinabung community. Through this event, the Department of Mechanical Engineering aimed to support the improvement of USU's accreditation.
The 11th Lustrum of Mechanical Engineering at Universitas Sumatera Utara was attended by prominent figures, including Brigadier General (Ret.) Dr. Hj. Nurhajizah Marpaung, S.H., M.H., Deputy Governor of North Sumatra; Ir. Nurdin Tampubolon, M.M., Member of the Indonesian Parliament; Prof. Dr. Runtung Sitepu, S.H., M.Hum., Rector of USU; Prof. Ir. Seri Maulina, M.Si., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at USU; Ir. Jamsaton Nababan, President Director of PT Pertamina; Dr. Ir. M. Sabri, M.T., IPM, ASEAN Eng., Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering USU; and Ir. H. Irman Oemar, M.Si., Head of the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) of North Sumatra, as well as several faculty members and students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

During the event, the Deputy Governor of North Sumatra stated, “We hope that universities will hold national and international seminars every year. We greatly need suggestions and input from research and programs to accelerate North Sumatra's development. The provincial government cannot work alone and requires support, particularly from universities.”
Meanwhile, USU Rector Runtung Sitepu praised the alumni of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at USU for their collaborative efforts in ensuring the accreditation process, which resulted in an A rating in 2016. “Currently, out of 156 study programs at USU, 45 have achieved an A accreditation, 83 have a B accreditation, and the rest are C or not yet accredited,” said Runtung. He added that seminars like this can help improve USU's overall accreditation status from B to A.
