The 14th Product Design Competition (PDC) and the 8th National Conference on Industrial Engineering (NCIE) were successfully held by the Production Systems Laboratory, Industrial Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara. The conference and competition carried the theme "Sustainable Solutions for Everyday Life" with the hope that innovative ideas will become solutions to problems that occur in today's life in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Product Design Competition (PDC) has been held since 2019, and students at the North Sumatra regional level participated. During 2020-2023, the competition expanded with participants by national level students, and in 2024, the competition was successfully held internationally with participants from Malaysia. The reviewers of the competition come from renowned campuses in Indonesia, such as UI, UGM, USU, UNAND, and UISU. The four sub-themes in the competition were Eco-friendly Technology, Health and Well-being, Energy Efficiency, and Safety Engineering. The event continued with "Awarding" for the winners of the Product Design Competition (PDC), which consisted of the first to third place categories, favorite product, best presentation, best poster design, and best video.
The 8th National Conference on Industrial Engineering (NCIE) was held on Friday, May 31, 2024, in a hybrid manner, namely onsite at the USU Student Center and online via YouTube (access link https://www.youtube.com/live/puTiCKFu7dE). The conference featured speakers such as Prof. Dr. Abdul Talib bin Bon from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Prof. Ir. Markus Hartono, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., CHFP, IPM, ASEAN Eng from the Universitas Surabaya, Djoko Kuswanto, S.T., M.Biotech from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (Founder Rumah Protesis Indonesia), and Ir. Aulia Ishak, S.T., M.T., Ph.D, IPM from Universitas Sumatera Utara.
Prof. Abdul Talib bin Bon highlighted the challenges of product recycling activities that require prior assessment, as a recycled product has its requirements. Prof. Markus Hartono explained the urgency of understanding consumer desires for product design and emphasized on identifying consumers' emotional needs that translate into product design parameters.
Assist. Prof. Djoko Kuswanto invites collaboration to make an impact from each individual action on product design using plastic waste materials based on Eco-friendly activities. Assoc. Prof. Aulia Ishak explained the application of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia that requires government and community participation in long-term product design.
The hope of organizing the National Conference on Industrial Engineering and Product Design Competition (PDC) is to successfully become a platform that builds a community of students with a spirit of collaboration who care about innovative solutions to everyday life that are relevant to sustainability and can inspire to continue contributing to the field of industrial engineering.
