The Chemical Engineering Study Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a guest lecture featuring a speaker from PT Aneka Tambang Tbk. (ANTAM), a state-owned enterprise in the mining and mineral processing sector. The event, held in the Smart Classroom of the department, focused on "Ferronickel Processing" and was attended by students, lecturers, and invited guests from the Faculty of Engineering.

The event was officially opened by the Secretary of the Chemical Engineering Study Program, who emphasized that this activity is part of the program's ongoing efforts to strengthen students’ understanding of the application of chemical engineering in the industrial world, particularly in the mining and metallurgy sectors.

Representing PT ANTAM, Mr. Petrus Pardomuan Butarbutar, S.T., delivered a comprehensive presentation on the stages of ferronickel processing—from laterite ore mining and reduction using a rotary kiln to smelting in an electric furnace. He also elaborated on the technical and environmental challenges faced during ferronickel processing, as well as the innovations developed to improve efficiency and sustainability.

“Ferronickel processing is not just about chemical reactions, but also about managing energy, emissions, and resources optimally. Chemical Engineering students must be ready to meet these industrial challenges with innovative thinking and strong technical skills,” the speaker emphasized.

The session continued with an interactive discussion, where students enthusiastically asked questions about the reduction reactions, slag waste utilization, and career opportunities at PT ANTAM. This discussion provided direct insight into how chemical engineering knowledge is applied in large-scale industrial processes.

This guest lecture not only broadened students’ horizons but also strengthened the collaboration between higher education and the national strategic industry. The event concluded with a token of appreciation and a group photo session, symbolizing mutual commitment to ongoing partnership and collaboration.
