On March 05, 2019, a seminar was held at the Mechanical Engineering Master and Doctor of Mechanical Engineering Study Program, which took place in the postgraduate hall of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering (FT), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU). The seminar on Occupational Safety & Health (K3) and Energy conservation in Industry is aimed at students and practitioners who explore the meaning, purpose, and objectives of these activities so that they can avoid and minimize the risk of accidents while working both in industry and the surrounding environment.  The event was opened by the Dean of FT USU, presenting the following speakers: Ruli Handoko from Pertamina (Title: HSSE Aspects in Pertamina Operating Units), Ir. Markin Sebayang from the ProvSU Manpower and Transmigration Office, Adenan ST. M.KKK from practitioners and K3 experts in the oil and gas industry, and Ir. Edy Suwarno, M.Sc. from practitioners and assessors in the field of energy efficiency.

The Mechanical Engineering Postgraduate Student Association FT USU held the activity through collaboration between the Study Program and PT Pertamina.  This activity was carried out to introduce "Understanding the Importance of Cultivating Occupational Safety & Health (K3) and Energy Saving Culture in Realizing a Professional and Qualified Workforce" so that when students have completed their education, they will apply for both industries and already know the basics of K3 in the industry, especially the Oil and Gas Industry.

The Oil and Gas Industry is an important sector in national development both in terms of meeting energy needs and industrial raw materials in the country and as a foreign exchange earner so that its management needs to be done as optimally as possible. The oil and gas industry is a high-risk industry. Violations caused by negligence and even small indifference to the requirements of the Occupational Safety & Health Environment (K3LH) can be fatal, causing disasters that have very serious impacts.

According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Resources (ESDM), the number of work accidents in upstream oil and gas activities throughout 2014 reached 159 events. Of these, 6 were minor accidents, 32 were moderate accidents, 16 were severe accidents, and 6 were fatal accidents. A work accident is an event or incident that is clearly unwanted and often unexpected that can cause losses of time, property, or property and casualties that occur in an industrial or work-related work process. Therefore, to minimize the occurrence of work accidents, it is necessary to have an Occupational Safety and Health Management System in the form of communication about K3.  (tbn).
