On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the send-off ceremony for the Impactful Student Program: Community Empowerment in Disaster Recovery in Sumatra 2026 was held at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU).

The event was officially opened and attended by Prof. Dr. Ir. Fahmi, S.T., M.Sc., IPU (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, USU), Prof. Dr. Ir. Renita Manurung, M.T. (Vice Dean I), along with representatives of the supervising lecturers, including:

  • Prof. Dr. Ir. Hamidah Harahap, M.Sc.
  • Prof. Dr. Ir. Halimatuddahliana, S.T., M.Sc.
  • Dr. Ir. Rahmi Karolina, S.T., M.T., IPM., GP.
  • Meidina Zulfa Hanie, S.T., M.T.
  • Ir. Tania Alda, S.T., M.T.
  • Sri Zahrani Dwi Mauliyah Parinduri, S.T., M.T.

This event marked the official departure of 50 (fifty) USU students from various undergraduate programs, including Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Malay Literature, Communication Studies, Entrepreneurship, and Management. The students were deployed to Lubuk Sidup Village, Sekerak District, Aceh Tamiang Regency.

Through this program, students are expected to contribute directly to community recovery efforts through several initiatives:

  1. Development of eco-friendly bataco (concrete blocks) made from sand and mud collected from disaster-affected areas, which are intended to support housing reconstruction and stimulate local economic activity. The project also includes the construction of one prototype house.
  2. Production of eco-briquettes derived from the carbonization of driftwood caused by the disaster, serving as an environmentally friendly alternative energy source.
  3. Water purification initiatives utilizing water from the Aceh Tamiang River to help meet the community’s need for clean water in Lubuk Sidup Village.

It is hoped that this community service program will not only support post-disaster recovery but also enhance students’ social awareness and strengthen the relationship between the university and the community.
