The USU Faculty of Engineering team conducted a community service project in Dusun VII, Helvetia Village, Sunggal, Deli Serdang, focusing on slum area management. This program aims to create a healthier, well-organized, and livable settlement through observation, planning, and sustainable infrastructure development.
The Community Service (PkM) activity was carried out by a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), consisting of Ir. Novrial, M.Eng., and Firman Eddy, S.T., M.T., under the theme “Slum Area Management in Dusun VII, Helvetia Village, Sunggal District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra.”
Environmental problems, irregular settlements, and the declining quality of housing functions as habitable spaces have led to the emergence of slum areas in urban environments. Based on data collection and field observation, it was found that the residential area in Dusun VII, Helvetia Village, is unfit for habitation due to irregular building layouts, high population density, and inadequate building and infrastructure quality.
The problem-solving process was carried out through several stages, including observation, socialization, planning, spatial arrangement, and the creation of design drawings and project documents related to the program implementation.
In the context of urban planning and development, spatial arrangement involves organizing various physical, economic, social, and environmental aspects within a given area. This approach aims to achieve coordinated infrastructure development, local community empowerment, and sustainable environmental preservation.
This community service program aims to provide practical solutions for residents living in slum areas of Dusun VII, Helvetia Village, Sunggal. The solutions include developing and implementing a sustainable development plan for the surrounding area, enabling the community to enjoy residential spaces with better infrastructure, healthier public spaces, and a more organized, productive, and livable environment. The program also seeks to improve access to basic services such as clean water sources, well-maintained roads, healthy housing, and greener surroundings.
