USU collaborates with Japan's Earthwise Consulting to conduct pyrolysis training and community education, aiming to reduce plastic waste with involvement from academics and the public.
The event, held from Tuesday to Thursday (July 26–28, 2022), was organized by the Waste Recycling and Climate Change Mitigation Center, Department of Environmental Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU).
The series of activities began with a presentation by Kang Dimas and Mbak Grace on the different types of plastics and an introduction to pyrolysis theory.
Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition process of organic materials through heating with little or no oxygen.
Following the material presentation, participants were trained in the use of pyrolysis equipment at USU’s Waste Processing Site (TPS). This training utilized Polypropylene (PP) and Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) plastics, with 100 kg of each type.
The program aims to help USU reduce plastic waste and manage it independently, thereby minimizing waste sent to landfills.
