Training of Trainers (TOT) for the Laboratory Heads of USU Chemical Engineering discussed the implementation of ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 and SNI standards to improve laboratory competence. TOT participants are expected to be able to apply these international standards in their respective laboratories.

The Chemical Engineering Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) conducted a Training of Trainers (TOT) program for laboratory heads, technicians, and assistants to enhance their competencies and understanding of laboratory standards in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025: 2017. The event took place in the Chemical Engineering classroom on Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 8:30 AM until completion.

The activity was attended by key laboratory stakeholders within the Chemical Engineering department at USU, aiming to provide specialized training on the implementation strategies for ISO/IEC 17025: 2017, an international standard focusing on general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, as well as the Indonesian National Standard (SNI).

The TOT featured two experienced speakers in the field of laboratories and testing:

  • Dr. Ir. Taslim, M.Si., IPM

  • Mersi Suriani Sinaga, S.T., M.T.

The core topics presented during the TOT included:

  1. Strategies and techniques for implementing ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 in testing and calibration laboratories.

  2. General competence requirements for laboratories to ensure valid, accurate, and internationally recognized testing results.

  3. Steps for applying SNI standards to improve laboratory quality and build user trust in testing outcomes.

Participants, including laboratory heads, technicians, and assistants, displayed high enthusiasm throughout the program. It is hoped that this TOT will enable attendees to effectively implement ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 standards in their respective laboratories, thereby enhancing the performance and accreditation of the Chemical Engineering laboratories at USU.
