Eighty students visited PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP) on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. The students were accompanied by three lecturers, Prof. Dr. Ir. Hamidah Harahap, M.Sc., Prof. Dr. Ir. Rosdanelli Hasibuan, M.T., and Dr. Ir. Renita Manurung, M.T.
The group was welcomed by RAPP's Mill Operation Support Director, H. Mhd. Ali Shabri is also an alumnus of Chemical Engineering at USU. He explained the pulp and paper production process. Not only that, he also shared his experiences while working at RAPP and motivated the group of students.
The purpose of the visit to RAPP was to learn about the paper production process from upstream to downstream. There, they saw tree nurseries to the processing into paper. In addition to getting a closer look at the paper-making process, the visit to RAPP was also intended to increase the student's motivation. This is because many alumni of Chemical Engineering USU have worked in the industrial world.
For the company, the factory visit by students is proof of the company's openness, as stated by RAPP's Mill Operation Support Director. "They visited RTC (RGE Technology Center). This visit is part of the company's openness to managing industry, environment, and human resources. This openness is a philosophy embraced by the company owner, Sukanto Tanoto, in running his business for the community, country, climate, customers, and company."
In addition to visiting RAPP, these students had previously also visited PT INALUM and Semen Padang. This series of factory visits is part of the Chemical Industry Processes (PIK) course program.
