The Doctoral Program in Architecture and Urban Science at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) began operating in 2011, making it one of the relatively new Doctoral programs. The main objective of the program is to train graduates to become experts, researchers, and consultants in the field of architecture and urban planning. The curriculum is designed to cover various aspects of learning, including philosophy, research methodology, architectural science, urban science, and other related learning components. One of the main focuses of learning is on urban science, which provides an in-depth understanding of urban planning, sustainable development, and the role of urban design in creating a better environment.

The North Sumatra Province is an area whose growth and development will accelerate far into the future, given the enormous potential of natural resources and the implementation of regional autonomy and its strategic location in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) regional cooperation. The follow-up of various development and development plans in this region urgently requires professionals who are ready to handle the significant increase in development and spatial development. The Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and all its resources are striving to answer the challenges of the need for professionals or educated manpower by establishing a Postgraduate Program in Architecture with 2 (two) fields of specialization based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 3091/D/T/2001.
