History

1958

The Department of Civil Engineering is the oldest program in the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, and its history is related to the need for engineers in the Department of Public Works in the late fifties. At that time, higher education in civil engineering in Indonesia only existed on the island of Java. On January 18, 1958, the Governor of North Sumatra formed a committee to establish a Faculty of Engineering in Medan. A year later, the committee, later called the committee of eight, finally concluded that a State Faculty of Engineering should be established in Medan, North Sumatra.

1959

In turn, the Faculty of Engineering officially began to stand on September 1, 1959 by running only one Department, namely the Department of Civil Engineering. In its development, the USU Civil Engineering Department was named the USU Civil Engineering Department. In 1991, lecturers under the Civil Engineering Department succeeded in opening a new Department, namely the USU Department of Architectural Engineering. In 2001, lecturers under the USU Civil Engineering Department also successfully opened the USU Civil Engineering Masters Department. After USU became a PTN BHMN in 2005, the USU Civil Engineering Department was named the Department of Civil Engineering in the USU Organizational Structure.

2016

In 2016, the USU Undergraduate Program in Civil Engineering carried out BAN-PT accreditation and received an Accredited B rating. The accreditation certificate is valid for 5 (five) years from March 21, 2017 to March 21, 2022.
