MEDAN – The academic community of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), particularly lecturers and educational staff, continues to demonstrate its commitment to social responsibility through the humanitarian activity of blood donation. This activity, organized by USU in collaboration with the Blood Transfusion Unit (UTD) of H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital Medan, is held regularly every third Wednesday of the month in the courtyard of the USU Polyclinic at Gate 1.

Amid their busy teaching, research, and student supervision schedules, members of the USU academic community can be seen enthusiastically gathering at the activity location since the morning. Before donating blood, each participant first undergoes health screening by the medical team from H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital, including blood pressure and pulse rate measurements, as well as hemoglobin (Hb) level checks.

This ongoing collaboration between USU and H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital aims to maintain the availability of blood supplies in North Sumatra, particularly to meet the needs of patients receiving medical treatment at the referral hospital. Establishing a fixed schedule on the third Wednesday of the month makes it easier for members of the academic community to adjust their academic schedules and prepare their physical condition before donating blood.

One of the participating FT USU lecturers stated that this activity represents a tangible form of community service beyond the academic sphere.

"A lecturer's contribution is not limited to engineering innovations and classroom teaching but also includes direct humanitarian action. The regular schedule every third Wednesday of the month greatly helps us manage our time amid our busy campus activities while also providing an opportunity to monitor our health periodically," the lecturer said after completing the blood donation process.

The medical team of the UTD at H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital also expressed its appreciation for the enthusiasm and consistency of FT USU lecturers in supporting efforts to meet blood supply needs. Regular support from educational institutions such as USU is considered highly beneficial in maintaining a stable blood supply, as demand continues to increase daily.

The consistency demonstrated by FT USU lecturers in this monthly blood donation activity is expected to serve as a positive example for educational staff and all students on campus to adopt healthy lifestyles and foster a spirit of sharing with others.
