The USU Faculty of Engineering Community Service Team assisted the Rumah Nusa Community and Denai Kuala Village Government in developing a Spice Tourism Village masterplan. This initiative aims to transform Denai Kuala into a sustainable tourism village based on women’s empowerment and local spice products.

The Community Service Team (PkM) from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) assisted the Rumah Nusa Community and the Government of Denai Kuala Village, Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency, in developing a masterplan for a Spice Tourism Village. The program, titled “From Kampung Nusa to Tourism Village: Mentoring and Preparation of a Tourism Village Masterplan as a Guide for Rumah Nusa Community and Village Officials in Implementing the Denai Kuala Tourism Village Pilot Project, North Sumatra,” marks the first step for Denai Kuala toward becoming a sustainable tourism village based on women’s empowerment and spice products.

The aim of this community service activity is to develop Denai Kuala Village into a sustainable pilot tourism village while enhancing the welfare and creativity of local residents through tourism-based rural planning. In addition to architectural efforts to establish a commercial center, this program also seeks to improve the production and quality of spice tea, which is the flagship product of the Kampung Nusa Community.

Several strategies were implemented as part of the program, including:

  1. Conducting training on marketing management for processed spice products.

  2. Procuring materials and components to construct Omah Kampung, including tables, chairs, booths/stands, signboards, and other facilities.

  3. Creating social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok) to promote Omah Kampung.

  4. Planting broad-leaved shade trees, such as sea almond trees, around the Omah Kampung area (now renamed Warung Nusa) and along the nearby roads to reduce microclimate temperatures, allowing visitors to enjoy spice culinary tourism comfortably without disturbance from the coastal heat.

This initiative focuses on developing a comprehensive masterplan as a guideline for managing and advancing the tourism village by integrating local wisdom, cultural potential, and environmental characteristics of Kampung Nusa. The mentoring process was conducted participatively, involving community leaders, village officials, and the Rumah Nusa Community as key stakeholders.

Through this program, it is expected that Denai Kuala will transform into a tourism village that not only preserves traditional values but also provides tangible economic benefits for the local community.
