Angga Alfahri Hasmandani Harahap, a fifth-semester student in the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), won second place in the Architectural Exterior Photography Competition themed “Nadi Ruang Utara” (The Pulse of Northern Space). The competition was held as part of Arsitektur Jumpa Tengah, an event organized by the North Sumatra Provincial Chapter of the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI) at Sun Plaza from August 5–9, 2026.

Angga submitted a work titled “Baswara Waktu di Beranda Utara” (The Radiance of Time on the Northern Porch), featuring the London Sumatra Building in the heritage district of Kesawan, Medan. The photograph combines historic architecture with trails of moving vehicle lights captured at night.

In the concept behind the work, “Baswara Waktu” represents the glow and streaks of vehicle lights as symbols of the passage of time, movement, and the pulse of modern urban life. Meanwhile, “Beranda Utara” presents Kesawan as an urban space that preserves architectural memories while remaining vibrant through the activities of its communities.

The interplay between continuously moving light and the historic building as a visual anchor offers a reflection on the transformation and identity of Medan. The second-place award represents a recognized achievement for the work and demonstrates an FT USU student’s ability to communicate architectural ideas through a visual approach.

The achievement supports SDG 4: Quality Education by fostering students’ competencies, creativity, and learning experiences beyond the classroom. The work’s focus on heritage architecture and the dynamics of public space also relates to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, particularly by encouraging appreciation for cultural heritage and urban identity.
