USU lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Economics and Business implemented appropriate technology through a crystallized ginger machine at UD Makame Berkah Indonesia. The program also included business management training and digital marketing strategies to improve productivity and competitiveness in local industries.

This Community Service activity was carried out by a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), consisting of Buchari, S.T., M.Kes., IPM; Ir. Nismah Panjaitan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPU, ASEAN Eng.; and Ami Dilham, S.E., M.Si. The activity was conducted under the theme “Implementation of Appropriate Technology for Ginger Crystallization Machine and Business Management Development to Improve Product Quantity and Quality and Business Management of UD Makame Berkah Indonesia.”

 

UD Makame Berkah Indonesia is a small business established during the Covid-19 pandemic in July 2020. It produces herbal beverages in granulated sugar form (granules). Over time, its red ginger granule beverage products have become increasingly recognized and are now being marketed outside the city of Medan.

 

The equipment used to produce bandrek powder remains traditional, relying on a stove, cauldron, and manual stirrer, taking nearly four hours to produce five kilograms of red ginger. Observing this condition, UD Makame Berkah Indonesia urgently needed production equipment in the form of a red ginger crystallization machine with an electrically driven automatic stirrer to produce greater quantities, faster processing times, and higher-quality products.

This Community Service program provides contributions to the partner through the design and implementation of appropriate technology—namely, the procurement of a ginger crystallization machine—to improve production quantity and quality. The program also includes business management development that contributes to increased sales and supports the achievement of one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (Goal 9), which aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation.

 

Business management development through marketing strategies utilizing targeting features on social media platforms is expected to effectively reach the right consumers, increase brand awareness, and drive sales. Therefore, the Community Service team provided intensive training for partners and members and facilitated access to various relevant digital marketing tools to support the marketing efforts of UD Makame Berkah Indonesia.
