This Community Service Program (PkM) was carried out by a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) in collaboration with lecturers from the Faculty of Economics and Business, consisting of Buchari, S.T., M.Kes., IPM, Ir. Nismah Panjaitan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPU, ASEAN Eng, and Ami Dilham, S.E., M.Si. The program adopted the theme “Implementation of Leather Shaving Machine Technology and SME Business Management Development to Enhance the Productivity of ‘Rumah Nayozie’.”
Rumah Nayozie is an individual enterprise located at Jl. Kemuning No. 14, Tanjung Rejo Village, Medan Sunggal District, Medan City, North Sumatra Province. The production process at Rumah Nayozie is still carried out manually, particularly in the leather shaving (seset) stage, which uses a cutter knife and a modified traditional sewing machine to handle thick materials. This manual process takes about 30–40 minutes to produce 12 bags per day, meaning that to achieve 100 units, it requires approximately 4.1–5.5 hours. Moreover, the manual shaving method poses a risk of workplace accidents, such as workers’ hands being cut by the blade, and often results in inconsistent product quality due to uneven shaving.
The solution introduced through this program was the application of a leather shaving machine, which allows for a faster, safer, and more consistent production process. The benefits for the partner include:
The production process can be completed in a shorter time with fewer workers, resulting in smoother and more even leather finishes.
The increased production capacity helps meet customer demand, leading to higher sales and improved business performance.
In addition to technical issues, Rumah Nayozie also faced challenges in business management. The enterprise lacked an upgraded SME management system, had no tools to diagnose business health, and had not yet developed a business plan or Business Model Canvas that suited its operational conditions. Moreover, the absence of financial records (such as cash flow and profit–loss reports) limited its ability to make strategic business decisions, potentially leading to a decline in revenue.
To address these challenges, the program provided SME business management development training, including:
Business health diagnosis,
Preparation of a business plan and Business Model Canvas, and
Basic bookkeeping training (cash flow and profit–loss statements).
Through this Community Service Program, the team contributed to Rumah Nayozie by designing and implementing leather shaving machine technology to improve both the quantity and quality of production, as well as conducting business management training to elevate the enterprise into a higher-level SME. These efforts are expected to increase sales performance and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
