The Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, welcomed Shunta Nakamura from the Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya University, Japan, for a two week academic stay from 13 to 27 September 2026. The visit promotes academic exchange, intercultural engagement, and stronger institutional ties between USU and Nagoya University.

The Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), warmly welcomed Shunta Nakamura, a graduate student from the Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya University, Japan. Nakamura will undertake a two week academic stay at Civil Engineering USU from 13 to 27 September 2026, with activities involving undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students.

The welcoming gathering was attended by Ir. Gina Cynthia Raphita Hasibuan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Head of the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Civil Engineering, and Dr. Ir. M. Ridwan Anas, S.T., M.T., Secretary of the Master’s and Doctoral Programs. The event was also joined by Dr. Eng. Ir. Cut Atika Putri, M.Eng., a Civil Engineering lecturer and alumna of Nagoya University, further strengthening the academic connection between the two institutions.

Other Civil Engineering lecturers attending the gathering included Ir. Fatimah Harahap, S.T., M.T., Ir. Muthiah Harahap, S.T., M.T., Ir. Gea G. A. Syafridon, S.T., M.T., and Ir. Rezky Ariessa Dewi, S.T., M.T. Undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students of Civil Engineering USU also participated, creating an opportunity for interaction across different levels of study.

As part of the welcome, Nakamura was introduced to a variety of Indonesian dishes during a shared lunch with lecturers and students. Introducing local cuisine to international guests is also a way of sharing Indonesian culture and hospitality. The informal setting allowed Nakamura and the Civil Engineering USU academic community to interact beyond formal academic activities and provided an early opportunity for intercultural exchange.

During his stay, Nakamura is expected to engage with the academic environment of Civil Engineering USU, interact with students and lecturers, and participate in activities that encourage the exchange of knowledge and perspectives between USU and Nagoya University. The visit also reflects the continuing development of international academic engagement between the two universities.

The program contributes particularly to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by promoting international learning experiences and academic exchange, and Sustainable Development Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals by strengthening collaboration and institutional connections between Universitas Sumatera Utara and Nagoya University.

Through international academic activities such as this, the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Civil Engineering USU continue to expand opportunities for students and faculty members to engage with global academic communities while fostering cross cultural understanding and long term international collaboration.
