His appointment was established through Rector's Decree of Universitas Sumatera Utara Number 4127/UN5.1.R/SK/HK.14.03/2026 dated September 3, 2026. In accordance with the decree, he is tasked with conducting international lectures online, providing enrichment of materials and international insights, as well as supporting the development of learning, research, and joint publications in the Master's Program in Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Engineering USU.

At his home institution, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, Prof. Syahrul Nizam is a Professor in the Department of Building Surveying, Faculty of Built Environment. He obtained a PhD in Building Refurbishment from Manchester University Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom, in 2006; an MSc in Building Technology from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2001; and a BSc (Hons) in Building Technology from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2000.

Expertise and Academic Fields

His academic and publication track record covers Building Information Modelling (BIM), facilities management, building performance, building refurbishment, green and sustainable buildings, indoor environmental quality, energy performance, as well as building and built environment management. His scholarly works also cover BIM-GIS integration for urban disaster management, BIM for green buildings, building energy efficiency, and performance evaluation of the built environment.

This expertise brings multidisciplinary and international perspectives to learning in the MPWK FT USU, particularly on issues of urban development, the built environment, sustainability, digital technology, and infrastructure management.
