Mining Engineering

Undergraduate Program (S1)

The Mining Engineering Study Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a flagship program under the Faculty of Engineering, USU, and the only Mining Engineering Study Program at a public university in North Sumatra. The program is committed to delivering higher education based on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) to produce graduates who are competent, adaptive, and globally competitive. The curriculum of the USU Mining Engineering Study Program is designed in alignment with the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI), International Accreditation Standards, and the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy. The learning process is focused on achieving Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), which encompass mastery of knowledge, technical and professional skills, critical thinking abilities, communication, teamwork, as well as ethics and responsibility toward occupational safety and environmental protection.

Students are equipped with competencies in exploration, mining design and operations, mineral processing, and sustainable environmental and mining economic management. The implementation of MBKM provides students with opportunities to gain off-campus learning experiences through industry internships, real-world projects, research, entrepreneurship, and community service, thereby ensuring that graduates possess work readiness and contextual understanding of the challenges in the mining industry. Supported by adequate laboratory facilities, a natural laboratory in Parapat (Lake Toba), and geographical proximity to various mining industrial areas, the USU Mining Engineering Study Program delivers learning that is applied, contextual, and relevant to stakeholder needs. The program is oriented toward continuous quality improvement through the evaluation of learning outcomes and the active involvement of industry, alumni, and professional associations. Graduates of the USU Mining Engineering Study Program are prepared to pursue national and international careers as engineers, mine planners, operational supervisors, consultants, researchers, and regulators, with strong professional competence and ethics to support the safe, efficient, and sustainable management of mineral resources.

History

2025

The establishment of the Mining Engineering Study Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) was based on the policy of scientific development within the Faculty of Engineering, USU, which is aligned with societal needs and industrial development. In addition, the significant potential of mineral natural resources in the North Sumatra region, along with the increasing demand from industry for professional personnel who are competent, ethical, and environmentally conscious, formed the main background for the establishment of this study program. On this basis, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, USU, Prof. Dr. Ir. M. Fahmi, M.Sc., initiated and facilitated efforts to establish new study programs, including the Mining Engineering Study Program. The Mining Engineering Study Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara was officially established in 2025, based on the Rector’s Decree of Universitas Sumatera Utara issued by Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., Number 3081/UN5.1.R/SK/TP.01.05/2025. This establishment represents Universitas Sumatera Utara’s commitment to addressing the need for excellent human resources in the mining sector as well as sustainable mineral resource management. The formation of this study program was initiated by lecturers and practitioners with competence and experience in mining and across disciplines, including Mining Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. The pioneering team of the USU Mining Engineering Study Program consists of graduates from various leading universities, both domestic and international, thereby bringing strong academic and professional perspectives with international standards to curriculum development and the implementation of the learning process.
