The Mining Engineering Study Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a flagship program under the Faculty of Engineering, USU, and the only Mining Engineering Study Program at a public university in North Sumatra. The program is committed to delivering higher education based on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) to produce graduates who are competent, adaptive, and globally competitive. The curriculum of the USU Mining Engineering Study Program is designed in alignment with the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI), International Accreditation Standards, and the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy. The learning process is focused on achieving Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), which encompass mastery of knowledge, technical and professional skills, critical thinking abilities, communication, teamwork, as well as ethics and responsibility toward occupational safety and environmental protection.
Students are equipped with competencies in exploration, mining design and operations, mineral processing, and sustainable environmental and mining economic management. The implementation of MBKM provides students with opportunities to gain off-campus learning experiences through industry internships, real-world projects, research, entrepreneurship, and community service, thereby ensuring that graduates possess work readiness and contextual understanding of the challenges in the mining industry. Supported by adequate laboratory facilities, a natural laboratory in Parapat (Lake Toba), and geographical proximity to various mining industrial areas, the USU Mining Engineering Study Program delivers learning that is applied, contextual, and relevant to stakeholder needs. The program is oriented toward continuous quality improvement through the evaluation of learning outcomes and the active involvement of industry, alumni, and professional associations. Graduates of the USU Mining Engineering Study Program are prepared to pursue national and international careers as engineers, mine planners, operational supervisors, consultants, researchers, and regulators, with strong professional competence and ethics to support the safe, efficient, and sustainable management of mineral resources.
