History
1959
September 1, 1959, became the beginning of the establishment of the USU Faculty of Engineering after the release of the Decree of the Junior Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 83303/S dated August 26, 1959, concerning the preparation for the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering in Medan under the authority of the Universitas Sumatera Utara starting September 1, 1959, as the 4th faculty.
1962
At its establishment, the Faculty of Engineering only had one department, Civil Engineering. With the increasing need for engineering graduates in various fields following the demands of development, the USU Faculty of Engineering then opened new majors, including Mechanical Engineering (1962), Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering (1965), Chemical Engineering (1979), Architectural Engineering (1991), and Environmental Engineering (2012).
2000
The USU Faculty of Engineering realizes that the demand for engineering graduates continues to increase in quantity and quality. Therefore, since 2000, the USU Faculty of Engineering has had a master's program for the Master's Program in Chemical Engineering, Master's Program in Mechanical Engineering, Master's Program in Civil Engineering, and Master's Program in Architectural Engineering. Then followed by the Master's Program in Industrial Engineering (2002) and Master's Program in Electrical Engineering (2007). The USU Faculty of Engineering also has doctoral programs for the Doctoral Program in Mechanical Engineering, Doctoral Program in Industrial Engineering, Doctoral Program in Architectural Engineering, Doctoral Program in Chemical Engineering, and Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering.
2017
After opening many study programs, the USU Faculty of Engineering continued developing. The USU Faculty of Engineering also opened programs for profession education, namely the Architect Profession Education (2006) and the Engineer Profession Education (2017).
2023
Now, the USU Faculty of Engineering has become a leading Faculty of Engineering in North Sumatra that has graduated hundreds of competent and qualified experts, conducted a series of national and international level research, and contributed to the community by providing complete services.

Bioactive Materials Isolation and Identification Laboratory
The Bioactive Materials Isolation and Identification Laboratory at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, is an instructional laboratory that supports educational and research activities in the Organic Chemistry course. This laboratory facilitates practical sessions for the identification of functional groups in organic compounds, organic compound synthesis through nitration and sulfonation reactions, and isolation of bioactive components from natural materials. Equipped with advanced tools such as hot plates, Universal Testing Machines (UTM), centrifuges, and glassware, this laboratory enhances the learning experience for students. The practical sessions are conducted in the second semester, guided by professors and assistants to ensure optimal execution of experiments.
Bioprocess Laboratory
The Bioprocess Laboratory, part of the Chemical Engineering Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, is a facility specifically designed to support Practical Courses on Fundamental Chemical Engineering II and Chemical Engineering Science I. This laboratory focuses on experiments in microbiology and biotechnology, equipped with essential tools such as an autoclave, incubator, colony counter, rotary shaker, and water bath. Through hands-on practical activities, students gain comprehensive knowledge of microbiology and biotechnology applications in daily life. The laboratory is committed to fostering the development of students' skills and knowledge with the resources available.
Laboratory of Material Analysis and Instrumentation
The Laboratory of Material Analysis and Instrumentation, part of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, plays a crucial role in supporting practical courses on Analytical Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis. This laboratory facilitates the application of chemical analysis methods, including conventional techniques (volumetric and gravimetric) and modern instrumentation, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, data precision, and discipline. The practical activities are designed to provide students with foundational knowledge of qualitative and quantitative analysis, element/compound separation, and the development of research methods through hands-on experiments. The laboratory is committed to enhancing students' analytical and reasoning skills comprehensively.
