The Undergraduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning (URP), Universitas Sumatera Utara, was established in 2025 and began its academic operation in the 2026/2027 Academic Year. This program was founded in response to the urgent need for professional planners capable of addressing the challenges of regional and urban development in the global era—not only within North Sumatra and western Indonesia but also across broader regions. URP USU envisions becoming an internationally recognized study program that contributes to sustainable development based on local potential. This vision is realized through its mission to provide planning education that is adaptive to global issues, rooted in local culture, and guided by the core values of BINTANG (Faithfulness, Innovation, Integrity, Resilience, and Wisdom) as the defining character of USU graduates.

Universitas Sumatera Utara proudly introduces this new program, established under the Rector’s Decree No. 3081/UN5.1.R/SK/TP.01.05/2025. This program was born from a strong commitment to shaping a sustainable, resilient, and globally competitive future for Indonesia’s cities and regions. URP USU serves as a platform for young generations eager to make a meaningful contribution to creating well-planned, equitable, and environmentally friendly urban and regional spaces. Here, students not only study theories but also experience the planning process firsthand through design studios, field research, and interdisciplinary as well as cross-sectoral collaborations. We integrate North Sumatra’s local wisdom with modern planning technologies such as GIS, big data analytics, and smart city planning to cultivate planners who think critically, adapt effectively, and provide innovative solutions to contemporary challenges. We believe that good planning is not only about shaping spaces, but also about shaping lives. Therefore, URP USU is open and ready to collaborate with government agencies, the private sector, communities, and international institutions to develop innovative, sustainability-oriented policies and design strategies.
