Through its team of lecturers, the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), developed a Community Service (PkM) program titled “Development of an Outdoor Reading Space at the Zero Carbon Mini Library,” located at Kuttab Al-Fatih, Medan City.
The program was led by Dr. Achmad Delianur Nasution, S.T., M.T., IAI, AA, IAP., with team member Dr. Drs. R. Kintoko Rochadi, M.K.M., and involved cross-faculty students as well as the USU Scout Student Activity Unit (UKM Pramuka).
The Zero Carbon Mini Library was built using bamboo and other eco-friendly materials, designed with energy efficiency and natural air circulation in mind. This project also serves as a model of sustainable architecture that supports the zero carbon building concept within educational environments.
In addition to providing a reading facility, the team also encouraged the improvement of children’s literacy skills through educational programs, effective reading training, and book discussions. The initiative was also supported by the USU Scout Student Activity Unit, which participated in book donation drives and literacy and environmental awareness campaigns.
Through the Zero Carbon Mini Library, USU not only builds facilities but also fosters awareness of the importance of sustainable and environmentally conscious education among the younger generation.
