The USU Faculty of Engineering’s community service team implemented sustainable tourism initiatives in Tongging Village, Karo, to enhance local welfare and environmental conservation.

The USU Faculty of Engineering’s Community Service (PKM) Team, led by Prof. Ir. Nurlisa Ginting, M.Sc., Ph.D., carried out a community service activity titled “Implementation of Sustainable Tourism in Tongging Village Tourism Destination, Merek District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra.”

The main goal of this activity was to improve the social and economic aspects of the Tongging Village community through the application of sustainable tourism principles in accordance with the guidelines of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), while supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

Throughout the program, the team implemented several key activities, including Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with tourism managers and local residents, the creation and distribution of educational brochures on sustainable tourism, and the installation of tourism signage to enhance visitor comfort and safety. In addition, the community received entrepreneurship and digital marketing training to creatively develop local potential and improve competitiveness.

This activity is expected to make Tongging Tourism Village a real example of sustainable tourism implementation in North Sumatra—one that not only boosts the local economy but also preserves the environment and cultural heritage.
