A team of lecturers from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), led by Fadly Ahmad Kurniawan Nasution, S.T., M.T., carried out a Community Service Program (PkM) themed “Mechanization of Brick-Making Business to Increase Productivity and Income of the Semangat Jaya Farmers Group in Bandar Tinggi Village, Simalungun Regency.”
The activity took place in Huta VI Sibatu-Batu, Nagori Bandar Tinggi, Bandar Masilam District, Simalungun Regency, involving the Semangat Jaya Farmers Group, a community engaged in small-scale brick production.
As part of the program, the team introduced a semi-automatic brick molding machine capable of producing five bricks in a single process within just three minutes. This innovation successfully increased production capacity from around 150 bricks to 1,000–1,500 bricks per day, significantly improving the group’s productivity and income.
In addition to the machine installation, the program included training and mentoring sessions to ensure proper operation and maintenance. This initiative is expected to serve as a model for the application of Appropriate Technology (TTG) in supporting rural economic empowerment and sustainable community development.
