The USU Faculty of Engineering team carried out a community service program titled CRAY-OON, transforming used cooking oil into eco-friendly crayons at Al Kahfi Foundation, Medan Amplas. This program not only educates about recycling but also fosters environmental awareness and children’s creativity from an early age.

The Community Service (PKM) activity was conducted by a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), consisting of Ir. Gina Cynthia Raphita Hasibuan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Ir. Muhammad Thoriq Al Fath, S.T., M.T., and Dr. Ir. Ahmad Perwira Mulia, M.Sc. The program carried the theme “CRAY-OON (Creating CRAY-OON from Waste Cooking Oil Utilisation): Producing Crayons from the Use of Waste Cooking Oil (WCO).”

The main focus of this activity was to provide training on utilizing used cooking oil (WCO) waste into educational crayon products that are safe, appealing, and environmentally friendly.

The activity took place at Al Kahfi Foundation, Medan Amplas, aiming to address environmental pollution caused by the disposal of used cooking oil while educating children about the importance of recycling. The used cooking oil, which was previously discarded without proper management, is now processed into eco-friendly crayon products.

The primary goal of the CRAY-OON program is to reduce environmental pollution caused by waste cooking oil disposal while providing creative education to children. Through training and mentoring sessions, the children of Al Kahfi Foundation learned firsthand how to filter, heat, and mold used cooking oil into colorful crayons using simple tools innovated by the USU team.

This program produced two main benefits:

  1. A cleaner environment, thanks to the utilization of used cooking oil that was previously discarded.

  2. Improved children’s creativity, as they were directly involved in the crayon production process.

Through CRAY-OON, the activity not only educates about recycling but also instills early environmental awareness — combining science, technology, and creativity for a greener future.
