Dr. Eng. Ir. Taufiq Bin Nur, S.T., M.Eng.Sc., a lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), served as a keynote speaker at the Carbon Asset Management Training: Commercialization Strategies for Waste and International Carbon Credit Methodologies, held at LPP Agro Nusantara on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

The training was organized to enhance participants' understanding of carbon asset management and the implementation of the circular economy as key strategies for advancing sustainable industrial practices. The program brought together participants from various units within the plantation and palm oil industries.

During the training, participants were introduced to the application of Circular Economy principles and Carbon Asset Management, demonstrating how palm oil waste—including Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB), fiber, shells, and Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)—can be converted into renewable energy, biochar, bioethanol, and other high-value products.

Beyond increasing the economic value of agricultural waste, the implementation of Carbon Asset Management also creates opportunities for industries to benefit from international carbon trading mechanisms through carbon credit schemes. This approach transforms waste, once regarded as an operational burden, into a valuable asset capable of generating economic returns while contributing to greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

By adopting circular economy principles, industries can minimize the environmental impacts of production waste, improve resource efficiency, and strengthen their competitiveness in the global market. These innovations represent an important step toward transforming the palm oil industry into a greener, more sustainable, and low-carbon production system.

The participation of a Faculty of Engineering USU lecturer as a speaker in this program reflects the faculty's commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, promoting technology transfer, and strengthening collaboration with industry. Through the application of practical expertise and innovative solutions, FT USU continues to play an active role in addressing Indonesia's sustainable development challenges.
