The Environmental Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), together with the Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, conducted a field visit on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as part of the “Preventing Recycling-Related Plastic Leakage from Plastic Recycling” activity.
The activity began with welcome remarks by Zaid Perdana Nasution, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Internationalization of FT USU. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of strengthening networks and exploring opportunities for collaboration between RRC.AP–AIT Thailand and FT USU in supporting sustainable waste management.
The field visit continued at Yayasan Buddha Tzu Chi and Recyclo Goods in Medan, both of which are involved in plastic waste management and recycling. Through the visit, participants had the opportunity to observe plastic waste management practices, recycling processes, and approaches used to reduce the potential leakage of plastic into the environment.
The activity primarily supports SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production through strengthening knowledge of more responsible plastic waste management and recycling practices. Collaboration with RRC.AP–AIT Thailand also contributes to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through knowledge exchange and the strengthening of international networks.
Through this activity, FT USU reaffirms its commitment to promoting education, collaboration, and the development of waste management practices that contribute to environmental sustainability.
