The Community Service Team from the Chemical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU) conducted a community outreach program entitled "Innovation of Environmentally Friendly Detergents Based on Methyl Ester Sulfonate (MES) and Eco Enzyme to Support a Clean and Sustainable Environment at the Al-Washliyah Social Welfare Foundation" on October 11, 2025.

The team consisted of Prof. Dr. Ir. Renita Manurung, M.T.; Ir. Sri Zahrani Dwi Mauliyah Parinduri, S.T., M.T.; Ir. Risma Fazillah, S.T., M.T.; Ayuni Yustira, S.T., M.T.; and Ir. Ilham Perkasa Bako, S.T., M.T. Through this initiative, the team shared Chemical Engineering expertise with participants at the foundation through practical educational activities.

The program introduced participants to the raw materials used in detergent production and provided hands-on training in manufacturing environmentally friendly detergents using Methyl Ester Sulfonate (MES) and eco enzyme. During the practical sessions, participants worked alongside the team to produce detergent, and the finished products were packaged in small containers as demonstration samples.

This initiative primarily supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by promoting the production and use of more environmentally friendly cleaning products. The knowledge transfer and hands-on training activities also contribute to SDG 4: Quality Education by providing non-formal, skills-based learning opportunities.

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, remains committed to developing community engagement programs that connect engineering expertise with everyday community needs. Through practical education and responsibly tested innovations, FT USU strives to promote more sustainable production and consumption practices while encouraging greater environmental awareness.
