Padang Tualang Village, December 20, 2025 – As part of its commitment to community service and the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), distributed liquid soap to residents affected by flooding in Padang Tualang Village. The initiative aimed to help meet the community's hygiene needs while promoting Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) during the post-disaster recovery period.

The liquid soap distributed was an innovative product developed by Prof. Dr. Ir. Rosdanelli Hasibuan, M.T., a lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara. The product was designed with a focus on effective cleansing, user safety, and ease of production, making it suitable for supporting everyday hand hygiene.

Through this distribution program, residents received essential hygiene supplies to assist them during the post-flood recovery process. The activity also served as an educational initiative, emphasizing the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene to reduce the risk of diseases associated with poor sanitation following natural disasters.

This initiative also demonstrates how research and innovation developed by FT USU lecturers extend beyond the laboratory into practical applications that directly benefit society. The distribution of the liquid soap reflects the faculty's commitment to research, commercialization,n, and technology transfer by ensuring that academic innovations address real community needs, particularly in disaster recovery situations.

The initiative supports the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). It also contributes to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through the application of research-based innovations, as well as SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening collaboration between Universitas Sumatera Utara and Padang Tualang Village as one of its partner communities.

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, remains committed to advancing research, innovation, and community engagement initiatives that respond to societal needs.
