A community service team from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), led by Yulesta Putra, S.T., M.Sc., conducted a school health capacity-building program for teachers and students of SMKN 5 Medan on December 1, 2023. The program was designed to enhance participants' knowledge and practical skills in natural ventilation and indoor air quality monitoring.
The program was delivered through educational sessions, workshops, and hands-on training using air quality monitoring instruments. Participants were introduced to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Monitoring devices, carbon dioxide (CO₂) meters, and anemometers for measuring airflow velocity.

Teachers and students also took part in simulated indoor air quality measurements in classrooms. These practical exercises provided participants with firsthand experience in assessing learning environments and understanding the relationship between air circulation, ventilation, and indoor air quality.
The program resulted in improved participant understanding of natural ventilation and healthy school environments. Teachers and students also gained the skills to conduct basic air quality measurements, enabling the school to implement appropriate monitoring practices and make informed improvements based on classroom conditions.
The initiative primarily supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being by strengthening awareness of indoor air quality and environmental health. It also contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by promoting healthier and more sustainable learning environments, as well as SDG 13: Climate Action through efforts to improve environmental conditions in educational settings.
The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, remains committed to advancing community service initiatives that integrate education, environmental health, and technological applications. Through knowledge-based and hands-on approaches, FT USU continues to support the development of healthier, more resilient educational environments.
