An October 2023 community service initiative by the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU) introduced Solar-Powered Public Street Lighting (Penerangan Jalan Umum Tenaga Surya/PJUTS) in Panji Dabutar Village, Dairi Regency. The project team consisted of Ir. Ferry Rahmat Astianta Bukit, S.T., M.T., IPM; Prof. Ir. Yulianta Siregar, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.Eng., IPM; Muhammad Safril, S.T., M.T.; and Dr. Ir. Naemah Mubarakah, S.T., M.T. Their involvement focused on applying renewable energy technology that addresses the practical needs of the local community.
The program was implemented through a series of stages, including community needs identification, site surveys, system design, component assembly, equipment installation, and operational testing and monitoring. In addition, community members received information on how the system operates and how renewable energy can be utilized in everyday life.
The project utilizes solar energy to provide public street lighting without relying entirely on the conventional electricity grid. The PJUTS system integrates solar panels, battery storage, and energy-efficient LED lighting. Operational testing demonstrated that the system functions as designed, automatically activating the streetlights at night. This provides reliable nighttime illumination while offering the potential to reduce dependence on conventional electricity and lower operating costs.
The initiative primarily supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7: Affordable and Clean Energy by promoting the application of solar energy in public infrastructure. It also contributes to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 13: Climate Action by enhancing community infrastructure through the adoption of renewable energy technologies.
The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, remains committed to advancing innovation and community engagement through the application of appropriate technologies. Promoting the use of clean energy at the local level reflects FT USU's ongoing contribution to addressing community needs while supporting sustainable development.
