Deli Serdang, April 15, 2026 – A Coordination Meeting on Urban Slum Upgrading in Deli Serdang Regency was held at the Office of the Department of Housing, Settlement Areas, and Land Affairs. The forum focused on discussing policy directions, evaluating ongoing efforts, and identifying follow-up actions for the improvement of urban slum areas.

During the meeting, Hajar Suwantoro, S.T., M.T., a lecturer in the Undergraduate and Master's Programs in Urban and Regional Planning at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), participated as an Urban Planning Consultant. He provided technical recommendations on settlement upgrading strategies, the alignment of planning documents, the prioritization of intervention areas, and the strengthening of coordination among relevant stakeholders.

The discussion emphasized the development of urban settlements that are more livable, safe, healthy, productive, and sustainable. A data-driven planning approach that reflects community needs was highlighted to ensure that slum upgrading initiatives adequately consider environmental quality, access to basic infrastructure, and urban resilience.

The immediate outcomes of the meeting consisted of academic recommendations and technical coordination that can serve as references in preparing and strengthening future urban upgrading plans. Improvements in settlement quality and community well-being remain anticipated outcomes, as the available information does not yet include implementation results or measurable impacts on the ground.

The activity primarily supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through academic contributions to urban slum upgrading initiatives.
