A community service team from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), led by Ir. Arman Sani, M.T., conducted a training program on developing an Internet of Things (IoT)-based locker security system in December 2023. The system was designed to utilize the Telegram application as a platform for remote monitoring and control.

The program began with a needs assessment of the partner institution, followed by a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and the preparation of equipment and materials. It continued with hands-on training sessions and mentoring, guiding participants through the development of a prototype digital security system.

During the training, students were introduced to the fundamentals of the Internet of Things (IoT), microcontroller programming, electronic circuit assembly, Telegram bot development, and system integration. This practical learning approach enabled participants to gain experience in combining hardware, programming, and communication applications into a functional smart security solution.

The program successfully produced a functional IoT-based locker security system prototype that operated as intended. This prototype served as a practical application of the participants' newly acquired digital skills while demonstrating the potential for similar technologies to be adapted for other educational and community needs.

This initiative primarily supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by strengthening digital literacy and practical technology skills among students. It also contributes to SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions through the application of IoT innovation to create a more secure and monitorable locker security system.
