WWF 2024 in Bali serves as a crucial moment for global clean water advocates. USU's Environmental Engineering team joins to learn, expand global networks, and explore academic collaborations.

The World Water Forum (WWF) 2024, held from May 18–25, 2024, in Bali, Indonesia, is a significant event for clean water advocates worldwide. This forum also provided an opportunity for lecturers and students from the Bachelor’s Program in Environmental Engineering at Universitas Sumatera Utara to participate. Held in Nusa Dua, Bali, the event was attended by over 50,000 participants from across the globe, including government officials, corporations, NGOs, academics, students, and the general public. Participants actively engaged in various discussions, panels, and presentations held offline in Indonesia.

Three lecturers from Universitas Sumatera Utara, Novrida Harpah Hasibuan, S.Si., M.T., Dr. Adri Huda, S.Si., and Meidina Zulfa Hanie, S.T., M.T., participated as representatives at WWF 2024. They were accompanied by two students, Gantara Igemuri and Fauziah Khairunnisa, who took an active role and gained valuable learning experiences during the event.

Beyond gaining knowledge, the USU Environmental Engineering delegation used WWF 2024 as an opportunity to expand their global academic and research networks. Several international academics involved in the forum were invited to collaborate with USU, paving the way for future academic activities with international communities, including universities, NGOs, and industries worldwide.

The lecturers and students also met with one of the keynote speakers at WWF 2024, Dr. Reed M. Maxwell from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University, USA.

Several intriguing topics discussed at WWF 2024, aligned with USU’s research and community service focus, included:

  1. Circular Water and Resource Management for Food Security and Resilient Cities
  2. Accelerating Safe and Sustainable Sanitation in Low-Income Communities: Case Studies from Asia and Africa
  3. Policies and Efforts to Realize Human Rights to Clean Water for Vulnerable Communities
  4. Indigenous Water Resource Management Practices: Case Studies from Africa, Turkey, Bangladesh, and Tunisia

The topics and discussions presented at WWF 2024 are expected to serve as valuable references for USU's Environmental Engineering program, supporting its mission to become a leading global university.
