The Department of Chemical Engineering at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the Chemical Engineering Alumni Association of USU and the Chemical Engineering Student Association (HIMATEK) of USU, held a public lecture on Saturday, December 19, 2020. This event was conducted virtually and attended by students, lecturers, and alumni of the Chemical Engineering Department.
The keynote speaker for this public lecture was Arifin Sihotang, S.T., an alumnus of USU's Chemical Engineering Department, who currently serves as the Environmental, Health, Fire, and Safety Manager at PT. SOCI MAS (Sinarmas Oleochemical).
The event began with an opening by the MC, followed by a prayer, a speech from the Chairperson of HIMATEK represented by the HIMATEK Secretary, and a speech from the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, Ir. Maya Sarah, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPM.

Arifin Sihotang, S.T., delivered a presentation titled “Chemical Engineering Application in Occupational Safety and Process Safety Management.” During his lecture, he shared insights from his career spanning over 19 years in the oleochemical, petrochemical, and biodiesel industries. He explained the critical role of chemical engineering in occupational safety and process safety management, including Process Safety Management (PSM).
His presentation covered various aspects such as process safety information, process hazard analysis, operating procedures, pre-startup safety review, mechanical integrity/asset management, management of change, and emergency preparedness. He also provided examples of incidents caused by failures in occupational and process safety management.

A Q&A session followed the presentation, met with enthusiastic participation from attendees. Several participants posed questions that were directly answered by the speaker. The event concluded with the presentation of a certificate to the speaker by the Secretary of the Chemical Engineering Department and a group photo with the participants.
Although conducted virtually, this public lecture is expected to provide valuable knowledge for students, alumni, and lecturers of USU's Chemical Engineering Department.
