As part of efforts to improve laboratory management and foster a safe, clean, and efficient work culture, laboratory staff and assistants from the Chemical Engineering Study Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) participated in a 5R and 5S training held at PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) from May 20–22, 2025.
This training was directly facilitated by the Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHSE) team of PT Inalum, aiming to equip participants with foundational knowledge and hands-on practices of 5R (Ringkas, Rapi, Resik, Rawat, Rajin) and 5S (Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, Shitsuke) implementation in the workplace, particularly in laboratory settings.
In the opening remarks, a PT Inalum management representative stated that the 5R/5S culture is a crucial foundation for creating a productive and low-risk work environment, especially in industries involving technical processes such as metallurgy and chemistry.
Over the three-day training, participants received both theoretical materials and field practice on implementing 5R/5S, including workspace organization techniques, equipment management, and visual audits for workspace efficiency and cleanliness. They also visited several PT Inalum units that have successfully adopted the 5R/5S system as part of the company’s continuous improvement efforts.
Through this training, the laboratory staff and assistants of USU’s Chemical Engineering Study Program are expected to implement a systematic, industry-standard work culture in managing educational laboratories, thereby supporting safety, efficiency, and the quality of practical and research activities on campus.
