The Faculty of Engineering at USU hosted Ngee Ann School of Design and Environment, Singapore, for a knowledge exchange on vernacular architecture. Discussions focused on traditional design and sustainable cultural adaptation.
The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), hosted a visit from the Ngee Ann School of Design and Environment, Singapore, on November 13, 2024. The event took place in the Smart Classroom of the Civil Engineering Study Program, FT USU.
This visit was part of a visiting lecturer program and knowledge exchange with the Department of Architecture at Universitas Sumatera Utara through the course Integrated and Contextual Architecture Design Studio. The topic discussed was “Local Practices and Traditional Building Design/Vernacularism,” presented by Raja Mohd Fairuz.
Vernacular architecture education in both Singapore and Indonesia highlights the importance of cultural adaptation and sustainability in design. In Indonesia, the focus is on the richness of traditional architecture from various regions, the use of local materials, and adjustments to the tropical climate.
Meanwhile, in Singapore, greater emphasis is placed on incorporating vernacular elements into efficient modern designs for dense urban environments. Both approaches aim to preserve cultural heritage while adapting to their respective local conditions and challenges.
