Undergraduate Program in Architecture

The Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Undergraduate Program in Architecture has been established since 1991, making it a relatively new study program when compared to other study programs at USU. The curriculum combines art, science and engineering to design and build physical environments that involve creating beautiful, functional and sustainable spaces for people to live, work and play. From building houses to designing iconic buildings, architecture is about creating the world around us.

The vision of this study program is to become an architecture education institution with international standards, characterized by local excellence, and leading in Southeast Asia in 2024. Graduates of the Undergraduate Program in Architecture have broad job prospects in various sectors such as interior design, construction, building conservation, project management, or even becoming freelance architects. Join Universitas Sumatera Utara Undergraduate Program in Architecture to jointly inspire positive change, create architectural innovations, and build the future of Indonesia. Students who complete this study program will earn a Bachelor of Architecture (S.Ars) degree and are ready to contribute to the world of architecture with their expertise and knowledge.

History

1990

The Architecture Study Program of the Universitas Sumatera Utara was established in 1991. The teaching staff who took the initiative to establish the Architecture Study Program were initially lr. M. Nawawiy Loebis and lr. Muhammad Hasan. The committee for the establishment of the Architecture Study Program based on the Rector's Decree No. 895/PT05.H/S/USU: 895/PT05.H/SK/1 dated October 16, 1990 was lr. Nurlisa Ginting (head of committee); lr. Muhammad Hasan (secretary); lr. Rudolf Sitorus (member); and lr. Morida Siagian (member).

1991

On June 6, 1991, the establishment of the Architecture Study Program of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (PSA-USU) was approved based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No.31/DIKTI/Kep/1991 which was set in Jakarta. The decree stipulates the establishment of the Architecture Study Program of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (PSA-USU) at the Faculty of Engineering. The Architecture Study Program of the Universitas Sumatera Utara continues to grow with a vision: "To become the most desirable architecture education institution". The Architecture Study Program of the Universitas Sumatera Utara continues to develop itself into a center for building and environmental research in Sumatera. This is proven by the establishment of the Master’s Program in Architectural Engineering, Postgraduate School, Universitas Sumatera Utara (PS MTA SPs USU).

2011

In an effort to develop knowledge and increase the effectiveness and quality of education delivery, the Architecture Study Program of the Universitas Sumatera Utara, which has been in the scientific group of the USU Faculty of Engineering, will continue to develop itself in the fields of Architecture and Planning, namely: (1) Architecture; (2) Urban and Regional Planning; (3) Landscape Architecture and; (4) Interior Design. In contrast to technical education in general, which is based on laboratory activities, what characterizes the architectural education process (and other design science groups) is creativity-based education with studio (design/planning) as the core in the learning system. Creativity is the key word, when the determinants of national excellence are innovation and creativity/45%, networking/25%, technology/20%, and natural resources/10% (according to Windharto, 2007).

2011

Meanwhile, the existing situation and system of architectural education as the discipline most responsible for the turbulence of the current situation is quite alarming. This situation is very evident in the local and regional conditions of North Sumatra. Moreover, there are efforts to reform the architecture education system at the national level, in order to anticipate global development trends that have a real impact on the development of built environment problems. Undergraduate education is more focused on producing graduates who are ready to develop themselves in various fields in accordance with the development of their interests during their education, rather than sending these graduates directly to the world of work, which is then often responded to cynically by the business community with the clichéd reason of 'not ready to work'. Thus, there is a need for further education for bachelor of architecture to further enhance their competitiveness in the workforce. Such further education can be seen in the picture of the condition of the architecture education system in Indonesia.

2014

In the present time and beyond, the Architecture Study Program of the Universitas Sumatera Utara continues to strive to become a superior architectural education institution that is recognized nationally and internationally and is able to play an active role in designing the built environment from a micro scale to a macro scale. In that framework, the Architecture Study Program of the Universitas Sumatera Utara must be able to produce professionals as development stakeholders in line with the mission of the Universitas Sumatera Utara to become a University for Industry. USU's vision of becoming a University for Industry is valid in 2009-January 2014.

2014

On February 28, 2014, USU's vision changed. USU’s vision since 2014 is "to become a university that has academic excellence as a barometer of scientific progress that is able to compete in the global world level". Then, in 2016, the Faculty of Engineering USU (FT USU) also changed its vision as a result of the change in USU's vision. The vision of the Faculty of Engineering USU (FT USU) is "To become a superior and globally competitive Faculty of Engineering in the development of science and technology and applied research". Based on the above background, in July 2014 the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of the USU Architecture Study Program were updated based on the USU Strategic Plan 2015-2019 and the USU Faculty of Engineering Strategic Plan 2016-2020. In addition, the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of the USU Architecture Study Program were also made based on market needs and national and international standardization in the architectural profession and associations in the field of Architecture such as APTARI, IAI, and UIA. Thus, since 2014 the vision of the USU Architecture Study Program is to become an Architecture Study Program that is able to compete globally and excel in the development of science and technology and applied research based on local wisdom in 2020.
