Medan – On October 26, 2026, Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), hosted a talk show themed "Prevention and Early Detection of Breast Cancer" at the FT USU Hall. The event provided an educational health forum for DWP members across Universitas Sumatera Utara to enhance their understanding of the importance of breast cancer prevention and early screening.

The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Ir. Rosdanelli Hasibuan, M.T. (Vice Dean for Education, Student Affairs, and Alumni of FT USU), Mrs. Meriesta Dewi Zaida Perdana (Chairperson of DWP FT USU), as well as DWP members from both the university level and FT USU.

The talk show featured dr. Heny Syahrini, M.Ked(PD), SpPD, KHOM, FINASIM as the keynote speaker, with Meriesta Dewi Zaida serving as moderator to guide the interactive session.

In her presentation, the speaker explained key aspects of cancer, including cancer epidemiology in Indonesia, the distinction between benign and malignant tumors, stages of cancer growth (carcinogenesis), and risk factors associated with breast cancer.

The speaker emphasized cancer prevention, risk reduction, screening, and early detection. Examination methods introduced during the session included imaging through mammograms, ultrasonography (USG), and MRI, as well as blood-based tests such as circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and hereditary gene mutation testing.

Beyond medical benefits, early detection helps reduce treatment complexity and healthcare costs. Identifying and addressing abnormalities earlier increases the likelihood of achieving more effective treatment outcomes.

Through the discussion session, participants gained deeper insights into risk factors and actionable steps to heighten breast cancer vigilance. Health education of this nature ensures that the community recognizes the disease before it reaches advanced stages.

The participation of DWP members across USU highlights the role of communities in broadening health literacy. Information gained from the talk show is expected to be shared with families and broader networks to expand awareness of women's health.

Through this event, FT USU and DWP support a campus environment that emphasizes academic development alongside the health and well-being of the Universitas Sumatera Utara community.

This initiative directly aligns with Sustainable Development Goals SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by advancing health literacy, disease prevention, and early detection awareness; SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by empowering women through targeted preventive health education; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering community-level health promotion partnerships across university networks.
